Update on UMass Amherst building access

As a result of decreased campus operations, the campus will transition to locking all building entrances effective Monday, April 6. These changes are being implemented to prevent unauthorized access and to ensure the safety of university staff and protection of property. In recent weeks, there have been several incidents of theft or damage to UMass property in unoccupied campus buildings.

These changes will be in place until further notice. Any UMass employee with existing UCard or key access to buildings will continue to have the same access to the locked spaces (with the exception of Du Bois Library, which is closed until further notice).

Impact on Faculty

Faculty with UCard or key access to buildings and spaces will continue to have the same access to these spaces while locked. In coordination with the Provost鈥檚 Office, we reviewed faculty needs for on-site teaching in buildings and rooms with Echo 360 Lecture Capture. For buildings with electronic card access, we granted access approval on the corresponding faculty member鈥檚 UCard. If a faculty member鈥檚 building with Echo 360 involves the use of a metal key, we are in the process of cutting and issuing those keys to corresponding faculty members. Our Campus Lock Shop staff is notifying faculty regarding the pickup instructions for keys, and to confirm new UCard access. If you need additional access beyond what is described here, you can do so through the forms on the Facilities & Campus Services website.

1.    For metal key requests, please go to the online

2.    For UCard access requests, please please go to the online

In a situation where you have student employees working on-site and they do not currently have access, please fill out the above forms as appropriate on their behalf.

Faculty who have an approved Laboratory 性闻联播 Continuity Plan should confirm that all personnel identified in the plan have key or UCard access as described above.

Impact on Staff

Staff with UCard or key access to buildings and spaces will continue to have the same access to these spaces while locked. If you do not currently have access to your building but are working on-site, you can request additional access via the metal key or card access request forms linked above. In a situation where you have student employees who are working on-site, and they do not currently have access, you can request access on their behalf by using the same request forms.

Impact on Students

Students will continue to have access to their residence halls, dining commons and the Campus Center. Any inquiries about residence hall access or room lock outs should continue to be routed to the Residence Life Operations Center at 413-545-0812. If you are a student with on-site work requirements and you do not currently have key or UCard access, please contact your supervisor.

If at any time you experience difficulty in accessing your work or teaching space, please contact the Facilities Solutions Center at 413-545-6401 (24/7) and a Facilities & Campus Services staff member will provide assistance including the ability to dispatch a staff member to your location as needed. Please be prepared to show a photo identification in these situations. If you have lost or damaged your UCard, or never received one, please include this information using the card access request link above. The Campus Lock Shop will be issuing temporary door access badges until further notice.

Again, these changes are being implemented to prevent unauthorized access and to ensure the safety of University staff and property and will be in place until further notice. Please continue to do your part by calling the UMass Police Department at 413-545-2121 should you have any non-emergency concerns about your spaces, and also continue to refrain from propping any university door at all times.
