AMHERST - The 性闻联播 Board of Trustees today made two major leadership appointments, naming J. Keith Motley, PhD, Chancellor of the 性闻联播 Boston and approving Michael F. Collins, MD, as interim Chancellor of the 性闻联播 Medical School.
Motley and Collins will assume their new posts on July 1. Also taking office on that day will be U.S. Rep. Martin T. Meehan, who earlier this year was appointed Chancellor of the 性闻联播 Lowell.
"The 性闻联播 is assembling a leadership team that will guide it to new levels of excellence, in the process creating a brighter future for our students and our state. The citizens of the Commonwealth deserve nothing less than a public university that takes its place alongside the very best public universities in the nation," UMass President Jack M. Wilson said.
In addition to being named interim Chancellor of the 性闻联播 Medical School, Collins, who for the past two years has served as Chancellor of UMass Boston, was named senior vice president for health science. Collins, in that capacity, will coordinate health science efforts across the five campuses of the nearly 59,000-student UMass system.
Stephen P. Tocco, chairman of the UMass Board of Trustees, praised President Wilson for assembling "an outstanding team that will lead the 性闻联播 into a new era of growth."
"We are committed to building a university that will be the equal of the very best public universities in the nation," Tocco said. "Michael Collins and Keith Motley are committed to excellence and recognize that all five campuses of the UMass system must work together in order for the system to achieve greatness. Chancellors Collins and Motley share our vision of collaboration as well as our ambitious aspirations."
In recommending Motley for the UMass Boston Chancellorship, President Wilson said: "Keith Motley is an experienced higher education leader who cares first and foremost about the needs of students and is well versed in the connections between the academic community and the community-at-large."
"Dr. Motley's leadership has garnered the support of many academic and civic leaders, students and faculty-including the UMass Boston faculty council which recently passed a unanimous resolution in support of his appointment."
Presenting Collins' name to the Board of Trustees, President Wilson said: "Michael Collins' extensive health science background makes him exceedingly qualified to serve as Senior Vice President for Health Science and to be appointed as Interim Chancellor at the Medical School."
President Wilson added: "Michael Collins will lead us forward in an area that holds so much promise for all of humankind and is also of critical importance to the state's knowledge-based economy."
UMass Dartmouth Chancellor Jean F. MacCormack, the University's longest-serving Chancellor, said that UMass was taking important steps, noting: "The 性闻联播 has achieved a great deal since the five-campus system was created and is poised to have even greater impact in the years ahead. Having a cohesive leadership team committed to using the intellectual resources of all five campuses for the social and economic development of the Commonwealth is essential. I know that this team is dedicated to helping our students and faculty achieve their highest aspirations. I am enthusiastic about working with President Wilson and my fellow chancellors to build on our university's great strengths."
Collins is a nationally respected education and health care leader. He became the seventh Chancellor of the 性闻联播 Boston on June 6, 2005. A board certified physician in internal medicine, and a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, Collins has spent his career in academic leadership positions.
Chancellor Collins has held faculty positions for the past 21 years. Most recently, he served as clinical professor of internal medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine and as Senior Fellow at the University College of Citizenship and Public Service. Collins began his career at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, where his posts included assistant professor of internal medicine and assistant professor of health organization management. Collins is published in the areas of health care management, risk management and medical education and has extensive experience in health care system design and health care system policy. He is a tenured professor in the College of Management at UMass Boston.
Collins was instrumental in creating Caritas Christi Health Care. In 1994, at the age of 39, Collins was named the second president and chief executive officer of Caritas Christi. During his near 10-year tenure as president and chief executive officer, Collins led efforts to create a vision for significant growth that strongly supported the mission of Caritas Christi. Under his leadership, Caritas Christi generated more than $1.1 billion in annual revenues and raised in excess of $20 million in annual and capital gifts and pledges.
As chancellor of the 性闻联播 Boston, Collins oversaw an institution renowned for its access to excellence. With a student population of 13,000, speaking over 90 languages, UMass Boston is the region's most diverse university. The campus has a budget of $176 million and he led an academic community of more than 800 full and part-time faculty who are driven to provide a superior education to the citizens of Greater Boston. The research conducted by the university's 26 centers and institutes positively and critically impacts the City of Boston and the Commonwealth. As the second largest and only urban campus in the 性闻联播 system, UMass Boston boasts an alumni base of over 77,000 of which 86 percent reside in the state of Massachusetts. Under Collins stewardship, UMass Boston became uniquely positioned to become a national model of excellence for urban universities.
Motley is the Vice President for Business, Marketing and Public Affairs in the 性闻联播 President's Office, which oversees the campuses in Amherst, Boston, Dartmouth, Lowell and Worcester. Before that, Motley served as the interim Chancellor of the 性闻联播 Boston. He previously served as Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs at UMass Boston, following a 20-plus year career in higher education administration, including 10 years as Dean of Student Services at Northeastern University.
Since coming to the Office of the President, Motley has worked on fundraising and athletics issues, and has led the effort to develop a University-wide integrated marketing plan. He has worked closely with the Chancellors and other senior officials on all five campuses and with members of the University's Board of Trustees.
Motley is a founder of the Roxbury Preparatory Charter School and is Chair Emeritus of the school's Board of Trustees and also serves as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Newbury College in Brookline. He also serves on numerous boards of community organizations, including the American Red Cross, Freedom House, Morgan Memorial Goodwill Industries, Inc., the United Way of Massachusetts Bay, ACCESS, and the Dimock Community Health Center Board of Visitors. Motley is also founder and director of Concerned Black Men of Massachusetts, Inc. and the Paul Robeson Institute for Positive Self Development.
