Teresa Ramsby, associate professor of classics, recently received the annual award for Excellence in College Teaching from the Classical Association of the Middle West and South (CAMWS).
Ramsby is currently director of the classics educator-preparation master of arts in teaching (MAT) program in Latin and classical humanities, a position she has held since 2010. The CAMWS award recognizes Ramsby for her achievements as an educator at UMass Amherst and for her role in preparing Latin teachers for their careers. She was nominated for this award by an alumna of the program who is now a Latin teacher in Springfield, Mass.
The CAMWS website page cites her efforts for classics MAT students, saying "She navigates the maze of certification requirements, finds practicum placements for six graduate students every year, finds scholarships for summer study, writes conference proposals so that each year鈥檚 graduate students can present at a regional conference, and arranges for teachers and principals to visit her students and give practical advice.鈥 One of Ramsby's colleagues comments, 鈥淪he is among the finest teachers I have encountered in 40-plus years in the field, and is already one of the accepted experts in the field of Latin pedagogy.鈥
Ramsby received this award last week at the virtual, annual meeting of CAMWS. In 2016, Ramsby won the UMass Amherst Distinguished Teaching Award and the College of Humanities and Fine Arts Outstanding Teaching Award.
